Phil Jamieson (born 17 April 1977) is an Australian musician from Wauchope, New South Wales. He is the founder and frontman for the rock band Grinspoon.

Biography

Phil Jamieson was born in Hornsby, New South Wales whilst his parents were on the road. His father Will was the singer in a Christian rock n' roll band called Good Grief, his mother was the keyboard player of the support act. The pair would tour beach missions on a Baptist church initiative, on the east coast of NSW. His parents' religious influence left Jamieson with things he was not allowed to do at a young age; he could not watch shows like Monkey and Dirty Dancing because they were "that way inclined".[1]

In the late 1980s, Jamieson became "quite obsessed" with pop music and the top ten on the charts. He admits being a big fan of Bros and that his first concert ever was for "When Will I Be Famous?". He also liked the likes of Bon Jovi, Michael Bolton, Richard Marx, George Michael and "just anything that was particularly bad."[1] He attended Wauchope High School.

Phil co-acted the lead in the school's 1994 production of Joseph & The Technicolor Dreamcoat, sharing the role with Matt Joyce. Also during his school years he had a band with his sister, Fiona, called "Dancing With Daisies In a Meadow Full of Corruption". This band won the Hastings Battle of the Bands competition.

Phil is best known as the frontman of alternative metal band Grinspoon. The band was the first band ever "unearthed" by the ABC Youth Radio Network Triple J. The first single was called "Sickfest", lifted off their 1995 self-titled EP. Grinspoon has been together for over fifteen years and is currently writing and recording songs for their seventh studio album. Phil also co-wrote the Unwritten Law songs "She Says" and "Because of you" with Scott Russo. He also co-wrote the song Elva with Scott Russo and Steve Wright.

In early 2005, Phil performed guest vocals on the track "Sayonara" by the Deck Dogz. In 2005 Phil also won best male performer in the Jack Awards and together with Grinspoon won their first ARIA.

On Thursday 23 June 2005, Phil and his wife Julie became the parents of a little girl, Lyla.

Also in 2005, Phil was a guest vocalist on part three ("I'm Losing You") of supergroup The Wrights' cover of Stevie Wright's (lead singer of The Easybeats) classic "Evie" (Parts 1, 2 and 3). The first part was first performed at the 2004 ARIA awards. The supergroup features members of many other Australian rock bands.

Jamieson brought the sounds of Grinspoon to millions on the world stage in March 2006, playing live at the Melbourne Cricket Ground for the closing ceremony of the Melbourne 2006 XVIII Commonwealth Games.

Jamieson's father Pastor Will Jamieson is the minister at the Wauchope Baptist Church.

Jamieson has recently relocated back to his home town with the support of his family. His wife Julie also gave birth to the couple's second child, another daughter, Evita.

Jamieson is an avid South Sydney Rabbitohs supporter, and is their No 2 ticket holder.

Drug addiction

In July 2007 information arose that Jamieson had been admitted to the Odyssey House rehabilitation centre's detox unit in Sydney to overcome an addiction to the drug crystal methamphetamine, also known as "Ice". Jamieson claimed the information was leaked by a nurse and said he felt his "confidentiality was completely raped."[2][3] He went public with an interview on the television program Enough Rope and spoke of the lows he went to; stealing from his bandmates to fuel the addiction and becoming estranged from his wife.[4]
